These easy Halloween cupcakes feature four fun decorating ideas  Monsters, Pumpkins, Spider Webs, and Witch designs  all topped with creamy vanilla buttercream. Perfect for parties, bake sales, and spooky celebrations!

For the Vanilla Buttercream

  • 1 ½ cups (340 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 5 ½ cups (660 g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 6 tbsp heavy cream, half-and-half, or whole milk (room temperature)
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ⅛ tsp salt

For Decorating

  • 12 baked and cooled cupcakes (any flavor)
  • Gel food coloring: leaf green, fuchsia + violet, black, orange
  • Small and large candy eyes
  • 6 mini Oreo cookies
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

Step 1 – Make the Buttercream:

  • Beat softened butter on medium speed for 2 minutes until creamy.
  • Add sugar, cream, and vanilla; beat on low for 30 seconds, then high for 2 minutes until smooth and fluffy.
  • Stir with a spatula to remove air bubbles.
  • Divide into bowls and tint with gel colors (green, purple, orange, black, white).

Step 2 – Monster Cupcakes (Green & Purple):

  • Green Monsters: Pipe a swirl of green frosting using a small star tip (Wilton #21). Add one large candy eye in the center.
  • Purple Monsters: Pipe small star dollops with purple frosting to cover the cupcake. Add multiple small candy eyes and sprinkles.

Step 3 – Pumpkin Cupcakes:

  • Pipe curved vertical lines with orange frosting using a petal tip (Wilton #125).
  • Add a small green stem with a star tip (Wilton #21).
  • Draw black eyes, nose, and a smile with a round tip (Wilton #4).

Step 4 – Spider Web Cupcakes:

  • Spread a flat layer of white frosting.
  • Draw intersecting black lines using a round tip (Wilton #4) to form a web.
  • Add half a mini Oreo as the spider’s body. Pipe legs and eyes, or attach candy eyes.
