Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder or fresh minced garlic
6 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
¼ cup grated parmesan
2 tbsp chopped fresh chives or rosemary
¾ cup buttermilk (or plant-based milk + vinegar)
1 egg (optional, for richness)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Line baking tray with parchment.
  • Mix flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  • Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  • Stir in cheeses and herbs.
  • Add buttermilk (and egg if using). Mix gently until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Shape into a disc, cut into wedges, and place on baking sheet.
  • Bake 18–20 minutes until golden and firm.
  • Cool slightly and serve warm.

Notes

For gluten-free: use 1:1 flour blend + xanthan gum
For extra flavor: brush tops with milk + sprinkle cheese before baking
